Gastroesophageal reflux disease and its related factors among women of reproductive age: Korea Nurses’ Health Study
BMC Public Health Sep 27, 2018
Kim O, et al. - Using data from the Korea Nurses’ Health Study, researchers evaluated gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its related risk factors (including demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and psychological factors) among 20,613 female nurses of reproductive age. Study participants were recruited from July 2013 to November 2014. Among young Korean women, cigarette smoking, increased alcohol consumption, low or high body mass index, depression, and increased psychosocial stress were related to the prevalence of GERD. Compared with those who never smoked, former smokers had a significantly higher risk of GERD. The investigators suggested that intervention strategies should be implemented to help nurses maintain a normal weight and manage their depression to reduce this risk among female nurses.
