Gastric emptying time of two different quantities of clear fluids in children: A double blinded randomised controlled study
Paediatric Anaesthesia Aug 02, 2021
Taye S, Mohammed S, Bhatia P, et al. - Given the risk of perioperative pulmonary aspiration increases with increased preoperative gastric volume, so, researchers here compared gastric volume and gastric emptying time following ingestion of 3 mL/kg and 5 mL/kg of clear fluids in 44 children (aged between 6 and 14 years) undergoing surgery. Patients were randomized to two groups of equal number i.e. Group 3 and Group 5 (patients received 3 mL/kg and 5 mL/kg 5% Dextrose respectively). Findings showed return of gastric volume to baseline within 1-hour even following ingestion of 5 mL/kg clear fluids, thus, reducing preoperative fasting time to 1-hour appears appropriate and it is safe to allow intake of up to 5 mL/kg clear fluids in healthy children undergoing elective procedure.
