Gastric emptying in healthy children using the Spirulina breath test: The impact of gender, body size, and pubertal development
Neurogastroenterology & Motility Jun 04, 2021
Kovacic K, Zhang L, Liegl MN, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to determine normative gastric emptying breath test (GEBT) ranges in a cohort of healthy children and explore the influence of age, gender, puberty, and body surface area (BSA). Healthy children, aged 8 to 18 years, completed the [13 C]-Spirulina platensis GEBT after an overnight fast. Breath samples were obtained at baseline, every 15 min × 1 h, then every 30 min for 4 h total. The 100 participants finished the test meal within the allotted time. In healthy children, gender, puberty, and BSA have a greater impact on GE rates than age. Although further data are required, pubertal stage and hormonal influences may be unique factors to consider when evaluating GE in children.
