Gastric bypass surgery does not increase the risk for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy

Moren A, et al. – The experts embraced this examination to investigate the occurrence and level of diabetic retinopathy (DRP) before and after planned bariatric surgery and to examine potential risk factors for deterioration of DRP. There was no deterioration of DRP following gastric bypass (GBP) in a majority of patients. They recommended screening for DRP before planned surgery for all diabetic patients about to undergo bariatric surgery to identify any pre–existing DRP.
