Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor type B agonist baclofen inhibits acid-induced excitation of secondary peristalsis but not heartburn sensation

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Feb 06, 2019

Wong MW, et al. - Since gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor type B (GABA-B) activation inhibits secondary peristalsis, researchers investigated whether acid excitation of secondary peristalsis can be influenced by baclofen. The study sample consisted of 13 healthy subjects, among whom the investigators performed secondary peristalsis with intra-esophageal slow and rapid air injections. According to findings, GABA-B agonist baclofen inhibits secondary peristalsis acid excitation in human esophagus, which is likely to be mediated by both muscular and mucosal mechanoreceptors. The potential involvement of GABA-B receptors in negative modulation of acid excitation of esophageal perception and secondary peristalsis was supported in this analysis.
