Galectin-3 is persistently increased in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and associates with anti-CCP seropositivity and MRI bony lesions, while early fibrosis markers correlate with disease activity
Scandinavian Journal of Immunology Oct 12, 2017
Issa SF, et al. - This study assessed newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in order to analyze the serum level of galectin-3 in these subjects and, to determine the associations with disease profile, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings and seromarkers of synovial matrix inflammation. Findings indicated a close association of galectin-3 with autoimmunity, smoking and joint destructive processes. In addition, expansive synovitis proliferation was primarily reflected by hyaluronan (HYA) and N-terminal propeptide of type III collagen (PIIINP).
