Fusion techniques are related to a lower risk of reoperation in lumbar disc herniation: A 5-year observation study of a nationwide cohort in Taiwan
World Neurosurgery Jun 29, 2018
Cheng CY, et al. - In this retrospective study performed using a 5-year nationwide database, researchers assessed whether or not fusion techniques can reduce the reoperation rate in lumbar disc herniation (LDH) patients. Between 2008 and 2012, 1743 index surgeries were performed, with 184 (10.56%) reoperations. Fusion techniques vs discectomy resulted in lower reoperation rates among surgical procedures for LDH but at the expense of higher medical costs. For reoperation, dyslipidemia was identified to be a risk factor. Time-dependent gender-difference was observed in reoperation risk.
