Further insights into the role of tumour characteristics in survival of young women with epithelial ovarian cancer
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 12, 2019
Elzakkers JCJ, et al. - In this retrospective population-based analysis, researchers determined how overall survival (OS) in women ≤ 40 years with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is influenced by young age and tumour features, to ultimately optimize counseling of this age group of patients with EOC. From the Netherlands Cancer Registry, data of EOC patients diagnosed between 1990 and 2014 was obtained. They evaluated clinical and tumour features via descriptive statistics. Overall 1,407 women ≤ 40 years and 29,022 women > 40 years old were analyzed. Younger vs older women experienced higher OS. A mucinous (36.4%), well-differentiated (31.8%) tumour in early stage of disease (49.9%) was more frequently detected in younger women. Older women most often had serous tumours (43.0%), high-grade (36.0%) and stage III (47.1%). The identified independent prognostic factors for survival were histology, grade, stage, incidence year, and age group. In EOC patients, age was identified as an independent prognostic factor for OS. Taking the tumour features histology, stage and grade into account, a more individualised counselling on prognosis could be offered to young EOC patients.
