Fungal infections in adult patients on extracorporeal life support
Critical Care Apr 25, 2018
Cavayas YA, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the prevalence, risk factors, and prognosis of fungal infections in adults on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) using the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry. All adult patients from 2006 to 2016 on any mode of ECMO with either a diagnosis of fungal infection or a positive fungal culture were included. Compared with what has been observed in the general intensive care population, no higher prevalence of Aspergillus involvement and Candida invasive bloodstream infection was reported in patients on ECMO. Both were shown to be independently related to a reduced survival. Aspergillus involvement was found to be strongly related to ECMO for respiratory support and influenza.
