Functional outcomes of temporomandibular joint reconstruction with vascularized tissue
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Sep 02, 2019
Hjelm N, Ortlip TE, Topf M, et al. - From January 2006 to July 2017, retrospective review at a single tertiary care center was conducted to determine how current temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction methods influence functional results. The study sample consisted of all patients who had mandibulectomy with subsequent reconstruction with vascularized free tissue. According to findings, it is a feasible alternative to reconstruct the TMJ with vascularized free tissue and produces acceptable long-term results. While functional status in the immediate postoperative period may improve or deteriorate, long-term results reflect preoperative function. It is probable that preoperative trismus will improve. Based on the method of TMJ reconstruction, no significant difference in postoperative functional status of patients was observed.
