Functional gains in children receiving inpatient rehabilitation after brain tumor resection

Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation May 28, 2021

Day AM, Slomine BS, Salama C, et al. - A retrospective cohort study was conducted to explore if children with brain tumors treated with resection benefit from inpatient rehabilitation, and investigate what factors present at admission may prognosticate better functional outcomes. Researchers enrolled 40 patients (ages 3 to 21 years; 42.5% female) admitted to the rehabilitation unit between 2003 and 2015 following brain tumor resection. After brain tumor resection, patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation made significant functional gains (as measured by the WeeFIM) during inpatient rehabilitation and continued to make significant gains 3-months after discharge. The data demonstrate that age and timing of admission provided the strongest models for predicting patient outcomes. As per the findings, the Neurological Predictor Scale did not prognosticate functional outcomes following rehabilitation when controlling for other variables known to influence rehabilitation outcomes.
