Function, survival, and care utilization among older adults with hematologic malignancies

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Apr 15, 2019

DuMontier C, et al. - In this prospective cohort study involving older adults with different hematologic malignancies, researchers explored the role of instrumental activities of daily living (iADLs) in predicting survival and acute-care utilization. A total of 464 adults aged ≥ 75 years with hematologic malignancies who visited a large tertiary cancer hospital in Boston, MA, for initial consultation were asked to undergo a screening geriatric assessment. Participants were followed for a mean duration of 13.8 months. The investigators found associations of several geriatric domain impairments, including probable cognitive impairment and physical dysfunction, with iADL dependency. Higher mortality and acute-care utilization were observed among older adults with hematologic malignancies and iADL dependency, suggesting that iADLs should be formally assessed as part of routine oncology care.
