Function-related indicators and outcomes of screening mammography in older women: Evidence from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium cohort
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jun 07, 2021
Zhang D, Abraham L, Demb J, et al. - As per prior studies, risk of death and breast cancer varied by comorbidity and age in older women undergoing mammography. Researchers herein examined the impacts of functional limitations using data from 238,849 women in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium-Medicare linked database (1999-2015) who had screening mammogram at ages 66-94 years. The risk of breast cancer, breast cancer death, and non-breast cancer death was determined by a function-related indicator (FRI) in which 16 claims-based items were incorporated. Breast cancer was diagnosed in 9,252 women; there were 406 deaths because of breast cancer, and 41,640 deaths from non-breast cancer causes. A substantial increase in the risk of non-breast cancer death was observed with FRI score, whereas risk of breast cancer death is low irrespective of functional status.
