Fruits and vegetables at home (FLAM): A randomized controlled trial of the impact of fruits and vegetables vouchers in children from low-income families in an urban district of France
BMC Public Health Sep 02, 2018
Buscail C, et al. - Researchers conducted the FLAM study [a controlled randomized intervention trial, performed in Saint-Denis (North suburbs of Paris)] to assess the impact of vouchers for fruits and vegetables (FV) purchase on the consumption of FV among children living in disadvantaged families in a French urban district. At inclusion, parent-child pairs were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention group received vouchers exchangeable for FV over a 1 year period. After one year, the intervention group had a significantly lower proportion of low FV consumers in children (29.4%) compared to the control group. Overall, the families used 82% of the vouchers. This suggests a possible potential of FV vouchers as an effective lever to increase FV consumption among children from disadvantaged households.
