Chumpitazi BP, et al. - This exploration was intended to ascertain whether fructans worsen symptoms in children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and whether clinical and psychosocial factors, and/or gas production, could identify those who were fructan sensitive. The authors found fructans to exacerbate several symptoms in a randomized controlled trial of children with IBS. However, based on baseline gastrointestinal symptoms, dietary intake, psychosocial factors, or gas production, fructan sensitivity could not be identified.
