Frontotemporal dementias: Main syndromes and underlying brain changes
Current Opinion in Neurology Mar 11, 2020
Piguet O, et al. - In this review, researchers provided an update on the current knowledge of the main frontotemporal dementia (FTD) syndromes -- the behavioural variant, semantic variant, and nonfluent/agrammatic variant-- their brain abnormalities and genetic profiles. The complexity of the clinical characteristics in FTD has become increasingly apparent, especially in the domain of behaviour. The language variants of FTD are now also understanding these behaviour changes. Studies on other behavioural disturbance that includes gambling, antisocial behaviours, repetitive behaviours, and apathy are now complementing initial interest in emotion regulation and social cognition. Novel pathological subcategories continue to be identified at a biological level. From a genetic viewpoint, three genes abnormalities clarify nearly three quarters of familial FTD cases. Recent initiatives look promising but need confirmation.
