Frontal lobe metabolic alterations in autism spectrum disorder: A 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy study
Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Jul 26, 2018
Margari L, et al. - An 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) study of the frontal lobe subcortical white matter (WM) was conducted to investigate the alterations of N-acetylaspartate/creatine (NAA/Cr) and choline/Cr (Cho/Cr) ratios in the frontal lobe subcortical WM in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients in order to expose any change of metabolites that could be the expression of specific clinical features of the disorder. This investigation included 75 children with ASD and 50 age-matched controls and assessed the functional activity of this brain region. Researchers confirmed the existence alterations of brain metabolites in the frontal lobe WM of children with ASD. This supports the importance of this brain region in clinical expressions of ASD, including its role in cognitive impairment.
