Fried food consumption and risk of coronary artery disease: The Million Veteran Program
Clinical Nutrition Jul 09, 2019
Honerlaw JP, et al. - Researchers tested the theory that frequent fried food intake in 154,663 members (mean age was 64 years) of the Million Veteran Program (MVP), an observational cohort study, was correlated with a greater danger of incident coronary artery disease (CAD) occurrences. Self-reported intake of fried food was classified at baseline: (<1, 1–3, 4–6 times per week or daily). Non-fatal myocardial infarction or CAD events were the outcomes of interest. There were 6,725 CAD events during a mean follow-up of approximately 3 years. Data reported that CAD's crude incidence rate was 14.61, 16.57, 16.82, and 18.28 cases per 1,000 person-years for fried food intake of less than once a week, 1–3 times per week, 4–6 times per week, and daily intake, respectively. Investigators found that fried food consumption has a positive, dose-dependent connection with CAD in a large national cohort of U.S. Veterans.
