Frequent emergency department visitors associated with a pain-discharge diagnosis
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Aug 04, 2020
Cronin AO, Morton DJ, Brennan JJ, et al. - Via performing a retrospective longitudinal cohort study of hospital emergency department (ED) visits from two EDs using encounters from September 2016 to August 2018, researchers sought to describe the characteristics of frequent ED users with pain-related diagnoses. Among all patients, 11.3% (n = 5,174) were frequent users; they accounted for 38.9% (n = 91,114) of all ED visits. Overall, frequent pain users were more frequently of middle age, female, have commercial insurance, and have 10 or more ED encounters (super user status) in a 12-month period. Understanding characteristics of ED frequent users with pain-related diagnoses may aid in designing community-based interventions to decrease episodic care and thereby enhancing care coordination and management.
