Frequency of sale and reasons for purchase of over-the-counter insulin in the United States
JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 24, 2019
Goldstein JN, et al. - In the US, researchers sought information on the frequency of sale and reasons for the purchase of over-the-counter insulin. Insulin, such as insulin isophane suspension and 70% human isophane suspension/30% human insulin injection, can be purchased over the counter in 49 US states and the District of Columbia. Insulin is prohibited to be sold over-the-counter in Indiana. Data reported that some patients with diabetes who are not insured or underinsured buy insulin from the Walmart brand ReliOn (Novo Nordisk) over the counter because it is considerably less expensive ($24.88 per 10-mL vial) than insulins from Novolin (Novo Nordisk) and Humulin (Lilly) sold over the counter in other pharmacies ($152-$163 per 10-mL vial).
