Frequency of complications including death from coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with hepatic cirrhosis
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 13, 2018
Singh V, et al. - Given that advanced liver disease is a risk factor for cardiac surgery, researchers studied the trends of utilization, complications, and outcomes in individuals with cirrhosis undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Study participants were cirrhotics having undergone CABG surgery from 2002 to 2014 per data obtained from the National Inpatient Sample database. Those with cirrhosis vs those without were compared in terms of in-hospital mortality and post-operative complications, using propensity-score matching. Findings revealed that individuals with cirrhosis comprised a small percentage of those undergoing CABG surgery in the United States but had a higher rate of complications and in-hospital mortality vs individuals who do not have cirrhosis. Data showed that in-hospital mortality for this subset of individuals continued to be high but has decreased in recent years.
