Frequency and timing of complications and catastrophic events after same-day discharge compared with inpatient total hip arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 04, 2021
Reddy NC, Prentice HA, Paxton EW, et al. - This study was sought to compare the risk of complications and catastrophic events for same-day and inpatient stay total hip arthroplasty (THA). Researchers conducted a cohort study using Kaiser Permanente’s total joint replacement registry. They distinguished primary elective THA (2017-2018). They applied propensity, score-weighted Cox proportional hazards regression to assess the risk for 90-day incident events, including emergency department visits, unplanned readmission, cardiac complication, deep infection, venous thromboembolism, and mortality, by the in-hospital length of stay: same-day vs 1-2-night inpatient stay. In this study, 13,646 THA were included as the study sample, 6033 (44.1%) with a same-day discharge. A lower or no difference was found in risk for complications and catastrophic events after same-day THA than an inpatient stay. The data exhibited that catastrophic events were more likely to occur early in the 90-day period, but an inpatient stay did not preclude events.
