Frequency and risk factors for liver disease following pancreatitis: A population-based cohort study
Digestive and Liver Diseases Nov 22, 2018
Chand SK, et al. - In a population-based cohort of patients following pancreatitis, researchers examined the occurrence of liver disease (LD). From 1998 to 2016, nationwide data on the general population of nearly 3 million people were used to detect acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis (CP), LD and cirrhosis retrospectively. They categorized acute pancreatitis as first (FAP) or recurrent (RAP) episode. From FAP to RAP to CP the frequency of LD increases. While the number of pancreatitis recurrences is a major risk factor for LD development, the probability of LD in CP is higher than RAP even for the same number of recurrences. Interventions that prevent pancreatitis and its progression can reduce the burden of LD.
