Frequency and clinical presentation of mucocutaneous disease due to mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in children with community-acquired pneumonia
JAMA Feb 19, 2020
Sauteur PM, et al. - A prospective, longitudinal cohort study was conducted to test the frequency and clinical presentation of Mycoplasma pneumoniae–induced mucocutaneous disease in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) using improved diagnostics. Between May 1, 2016, and April 30, 2017, researchers enrolled a total of 152 children aged 3 to 18 years with CAP, at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich. Researchers conducted data analysis between July 10, 2017, to June 29, 2018. Comparison in children with CAP of other origins, the mucocutaneous disease occurred significantly more frequently in children with CAP due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The results of this study indicated that Mycoplasma pneumoniae–induced mucocutaneous disease was correlated with increased systemic inflammation, morbidity, and a higher risk of long-term sequelae.
