Frequency and clinical features associated with eczema herpeticum in hospitalized children with presumed atopic dermatitis skin infection
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Dec 06, 2019
Hemani SA, et al. - Among children ≤ 18 years of age admitted to a large hospital system for atopic dermatitis (AD) with presumed skin infection from January 2004 to December 2018, researchers retrospectively reviewed clinical characteristics of eczema herpeticum (EH) and its frequency of codetection with Staphylococcus aureus (SA) or group A streptococcus (GAS). It excluded those with an alternative primary diagnosis or lack of microbiological information. One hundred thirty-three have been tested for herpes simplex virus among 180 AD encounters with a suspected skin infection. In children admitted for presumed AD skin infection, caregivers will maintain a high level of concern for EH. GAS has been correlated more often with ADEH− encounters.
