Free testosterone value before radical prostatectomy is related to oncologic outcomes and post-operative erectile function

BMC Cancer Jan 24, 2019

Li T, et al. - Whether or not free testosterone (FT) before radical prostatectomy was related to post-operative oncologic outcomes, erectile function, and continence was investigated. Researchers performed a retrospective review of data from 586 patients with available information who got treatment in their center. Outcomes revealed low total testosterone (TT) and FT values in 106 patients (18.1%) and 152 patients (25.9%), respectively, both in relation to older age, concomitant diabetes, higher possibility of pre-operative erectile dysfunction (ED), higher pre-operative prostate-specific antigen value, higher clinical stage and higher Gleason score in biopsy. They identified FT as an independent risk factor for biochemical recurrence. This study demonstrates a correlation of low FT value before radical prostatectomy with adverse pathological outcomes, biochemical recurrence, and postoperative ED.
