FRAX assessment in people aging with HIV
HIV Medicine Sep 23, 2021
Mazzitelli M, Isabel PB, Muramatsu T, et al. - The findings show that FRAX scores do not predict the existence of osteoporosis in the population of PLWH over 50 years old, and so FRAX scores may not be the best tool for determining whether or not PLWH are eligible for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans.
It was a cross-sectional study.
The sample consisted of a cohort of PLWH aged > 50 years attending the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and who had a DXA scan between January 2009 and December 2018.
In total, 744 patients (92.9% male, mean age 56 ± 5 years) were involved in the study.
Osteoporosis (at DXA scans) and osteopenia were found in 12.2% and 63.7% of the population, respectively.
FRAX major was > 10% in only two individuals, while 90/91 (98.9%) of osteoporosis patients had a normal FRAX score.
The occurrence of osteoporosis was found to be substantially linked to a low BMI and estimated glomerular filtration rate.
