Frailty in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery increases hospital stay and 12-month readmission rate
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Nov 19, 2019
Lal S, Gray A, Kim E, et al. - Whether frailty could predict postoperative outcomes in a cohort of older cardiac surgery patients, was investigated in this study utilizing prospective data from cardiac surgery patients 65 years of age and older who underwent surgery at Dunedin Hospital. By means of the Edmonton frail scale and five-metre gait speed, the evaluation of frailty was performed. This study included 96 patients with a median age of 74 and 65 (68%) were males. Scoring of 64 (67%) as not frail, 22 (23%) as vulnerable, and 10 (10%) as frail was done. Findings revealed that the length of hospital stay after cardiac surgery and 12-month readmission rate were predicted by the Edmonton frail scale score in patients older than 65 years of age.
