Frailty defined by 19 items as a predictor of short-term functional recovery in patients with hip fracture

Injury Oct 10, 2019

Inoue T, Misu S, Tanaka T, et al. - In this retrospective observational study involving 274 patients (mean age 83.7 ± 7.4 years), researchers ascertained if frailty can anticipate functional recovery and clinical outcomes during the acute phase in hip fracture. Frailty defined using 19-item modified Frailty Index (mFI) was the main exposure. During the acute phase following hip fracture, frailty defined by 19-item mFI can predict short-term functional recovery. Findings suggested a significant association of higher mFI with an increased probability of lower functional recovery, the occurrence of postoperative complications and not returning home in multiple logistic regression analyses.
