Frailty and quality of life after cochlear implantation in older adults
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Apr 23, 2021
Aylward A, Murphy-Meyers M, Allen CM, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional survey to investigate the relationship among frailty index, hearing measures, and hearing-related quality of life (QOL) in older recipients of cochlear implants. Between July 13, 2000, and April 3, 2019, adults aged ≥ 65 years at the time of receiving cochlear implants were asked to complete a questionnaire on hearing-related QOL. A chart review was conducted to identify patients’ characteristics. Data from 143 people were included. Hearing scores after cochlear implantation in older adults do not correlate with frailty index. After cochlear implantation, older adults with a lower frailty index and a higher increase in pure tone average have better QOL ratings.
