Fracture risk in young and middle-aged adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Clinical Endocrinology Jun 30, 2018
Thong EP, et al. - The researchers carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to ascertain the risk of fracture in young and middle-aged adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) aged 18 to 50 years old. They searched Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, EBM reviews, and relevant conference abstracts for this analysis. It was observed that fracture risk remains significantly elevated in young and middle-aged adults with T1DM in the absence of age-related comorbidities. The findings from the present study suggested that younger age did not mitigate against hip fracture risk in T1DM. Therefore, health professionals need to be aware of this risk.
