Fracture rate in women with oestrogen deficiency – Comparison of Turner syndrome and premature ovarian insufficiency
Clinical Endocrinology Oct 24, 2019
Attard CC, Cameron-Pimblett A, Puri D, et al. - Among 267 women with Turner syndrome (TS), median age 34.3 years, and 67 women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), median age 28.1 years, researchers conducted this cross-sectional observational study to evaluate fracture history and bone mineral density. They used a questionnaire to gather data on fracture history, co-morbidities and drug history including age at first oestrogen exposure. In women with TS and POI, the overall fracture rate was comparable. Findings suggested no association of TS with an overall excess risk of bone fracture. In women with TS, the higher rate of fractures at major osteoporotic fractures sites may be secondary to hearing impairment, thin cortical bone and abnormal bone remodelling.
