Forehead or ear temperature measurement cannot replace rectal measurements, except for screening purposes
BMC Pediatrics Jan 31, 2018
Mogensen CB, et al. - Researchers evaluated in a real-life children population whether the forehead or ear temperature measurements could be used in screening to detect fever and whether the agreement with the rectal temperature for different age groups was acceptable for clinical use. Based on a large sample of children, they found that temporal measurement of temperature was not currently recommendable. However, the tympanic measurement performed by devices using the same technology as in this study was useful for screening purposes, especially among children aged 6 months to 5 years. The rectal temperature measurement persisted as the recommended method for the exact measurement of temperature.
