Food insecurity is associated with lower cognitive functioning in a national sample of older adults
The Journal of Nutrition Jul 02, 2019
Portela-Parra ET, et al. - In a study sample of older adults, researchers assessed the links between food insecurity and cognitive functioning. From NHANES (2011–2014), data were extracted from 1,823 older adults with incomes ≤ 300% of the federal poverty level. The investigators used the 10-item Adult Food Security Survey Module to measure food security. As for food insecurity, a 23.7% of prevalence was reported in the analytic population. Findings revealed an inverse link of food insecurity with cognitive function among adults aged ≥ 60 years, which could translate into higher risk of cognitive impairment over time.
