Food insecurity is associated with anxiety, stress, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in a cohort of women with or at risk of HIV in the United States
The Journal of Nutrition Jun 02, 2019
Whittle HJ, et al. - In a prospective cohort study of 2,553 US women with, or at risk for, HIV (primarily African American/black; 71.6%), researchers assessed the links between food insecurity and symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), stress, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Increasingly higher GAD-7 scores were observed in relation to current marginal, low, and very low food security, which was also related to 1.41, 2.03, and 3.23 times higher odds of screening positive for moderate-to-severe GAD, respectively, after adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related factors—including HIV serostatus. Overall, a possible link of food insecurity with a range of poor mental health outcomes was suggested in this study sample of women in the United States with HIV or at risk for HIV.
