Food insecurity is an independent risk factor for depressive symptoms in survivors of digestive cancers
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Apr 19, 2021
Madigan KE, Leiman DA, Palakshappa D., et al. - This study assessed the association between food insecurity (FI) and depressive symptoms within this population. Researchers performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2007-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey including all adults ({greater than or equal to 20 years old) with a self-reported history of digestive cancer (including colorectal, esophageal, stomach, liver, and pancreas). Multivariable ordinal logistic regression was used to investigate the relationship between FI and depressive symptoms, controlling for demographic and clinical covariates. A total of 229 adult digestive cancer survivors were included in the study (weighted N=1,510,579). The data exhibited that FI was correlated with an elevated odds of depressive symptoms among a nationally representative sample of colorectal and other digestive cancer survivors.
