Food insecurity and cognitive impairment in the Miami Adult Studies on HIV (MASH) cohort
The Journal of Nutrition Feb 14, 2021
Tamargo JA, Meade CS, Campa A, et al. - In older adults and people living with HIV (PLWH), food insecurity is a social determinant of health correlated with cognitive impairments, so researchers investigated a cohort of people living with and without HIV for the influence of food insecurity on cognitive impairment over a 2-year follow-up period. This was a longitudinal analysis of primarily economically disadvantaged, middle-aged, Black, and Hispanic candidates from the Miami Adult Studies on HIV (MASH) cohort. In total, 394 candidates (247 HIV positive) with 2-year follow-up data were involved in this analysis. Food insecurity, especially among those who experience food insecurity regularly or persistently, is a significant risk factor for cognitive impairment. Food insecurity screening and interventions to ensure access to appropriate, nutritious foods can help delay cognitive decline among people who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
