Food elimination in the management of refractory chronic rhinosinusitis: A pilot study

ENT Journal May 14, 2020

Odat H, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective open-label study to assess the effectiveness of food elimination therapy as adjuvant treatment in refractory patients having chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with positive food sensitization. The sample consisted of consecutive adult patients with refractory nonobstructive CRS (patients who had persistent sinonasal symptoms despite endoscopic sinus surgery and patent sinuses ostia with adequate medical treatment) with positive food sensitization. Initially 22 patients were participated in this study. The most common presenting symptoms were nasal discharge and facial pressure. The most common eliminated foods were shellfish, egg, and meat mix. A significant difference was found in the patients’ Lund-Kennedy symptom and Lund-Kennedy endoscopic appearance scores at 6 and 12 weeks after food elimination therapy. Elimination of food in refractory CRS is an important adjuvant treatment and should be taken into consideration in the treatment algorithm of patients with persistent symptoms following positive sinus surgery.
