Fondaparinux sodium compared with low-molecular-weight heparins for perioperative surgical thromboprophylaxis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the American Heart Association May 15, 2019
Kumar A, et al. - Researchers compared fondaparinux to low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWH) for perioperative surgical thromboprophylaxis, focusing on efficacy and safety. They identified relevant randomized controlled trials published from 2000 to 2017 from various databases. The final analysis included 12 randomized controlled trials including 14,906 patients. The fondaparinux group showed odds of venous thromboembolism that were 0.49 times those observed in the LMWH group, as revealed in pooled analyses. However, the fondaparinux group exhibited odds of major bleeding that were 1.48 times the odds in the LMWH group. Overall, a superior efficacy of fondaparinux in reducing venous thromboembolism was evident, however, it was also related to increased odds of major bleeding.
