Folic acid fortification and prevalences of neural tube defects, orofacial clefts, and gastroschisis in California, 1989 to 2010
Birth Defects Research Part A: Clinical and Molecular Teratology Aug 11, 2019
Yang W, et al. - Researchers investigated how folic acid fortification in California brought about changes in the prevalences of neural tube defects (NTDs), orofacial clefts, and gastroschisis. In this population-based study, vital statistics and birth defects registry data were analyzed. As per outcomes, postfortification period exhibited a slower decline in the prevalence of NTDs, an emergence of a decline in orofacial clefts, and a slower increase in gastroschisis, relative to the prefortification period.
