Foley catheter vs oral misoprostol for the induction of labor: An individual participant data meta‐analysis
Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology Dec 21, 2020
Kemper JI, Li W, Goni S, et al. - The effectiveness and safety of Foley catheter vs oral misoprostol use were determined in induction of labor (IOL). Searching the Cochrane Review on Mechanical Methods for Induction of Labour, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase via Ovid, Ovid Emcare, CINAHL Plus, ClinicalTrials.gov and Scopus, they identified seven eligible studies; of these, four shared individual participant data for a total of 2,815 participants, of which 1,399 women were assigned to Foley catheter and 1,416 to oral misoprostol. Outcomes revealed less effectiveness of Foley catheter relative to oral misoprostol given its correlation with fewer vaginal births. However, Foley catheter induction may lower adverse perinatal outcomes while no significant difference in maternal safety was evident.
