Fluid management practices after surgery for congenital heart disease: A worldwide survey
Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Apr 12, 2019
Hanot J, et al. - A worldwide survey inquiring about fluid management practices after pediatric cardiac surgery was performed among pediatric cardiac intensivists in order to determine common practice for fluid management following cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease. Researchers received overall 108 responses from 18 countries and six continents. Isotonic solutions were most commonly used for IV maintenance, mainly NaCl 0.9% (42%); followed by hypotonic fluids (33%) and balanced crystalloids solutions (14%). As reported by most of the respondents, they limit total fluid intake to 50% during the first 24 hours following cardiac surgery. Overall, fluid management practices varied greatly among pediatric cardiac intensivists and this was true for maintenance fluids as well as for volume resuscitation. Findings indicated frequent administration of colloids, although there was a lack of evidence.
