Fluid collection bags pose a threat for bacterial contamination in primary total hip arthroplasty: A prospective, internally controlled, non-blinded trial
Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Jun 18, 2018
Ploeger MM, et al. - Experts tested the presumptions that the fluid collection bags are a potential reservoir of bacteria and that there is a time dependency for bacterial contamination in primary total hip arthroplasty. As per data, in THA, the fluid collection bags were a potential reservoir for bacteria when surgery time was greater than a 90-min threshold. The advantages of the use of fluid collection bags were outweighed by the risks from fluid collection bags. Hence, they suggested not to use fluid collection bags intraoperatively in primary THA.
