Flexible vs rigid laryngoscopy: A randomized crossover study comparing patient experience
The Laryngoscope Jan 11, 2020
Clark BS, Gao WZ, Bertelsen C, et al. - In this randomized crossover study involving 23 normal adult individuals, researchers contrasted flexible distal-chip laryngoscopy (FDL) vs rigid telescopic laryngoscopy (RTL) with regard to the level of pain, comfort, satisfaction, and preference of the examiner, as well as assessing the clinician's evaluation of the experience of the examiner with both types of exam. Participants in the study were recruited to undergo both FDL and RTL. According to findings, patients undergoing FDL report greater discomfort and pain vs RTL, but do not show differential test preference. Overall, the discomfort of patients undergoing FDL is underestimated by clinicians, but participants still maintain high satisfaction with both exams.
