Five-year survival following endovascular repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms is improving
Journal of Vascular Surgery Mar 03, 2020
Varkevisser RRB, Swerdlow NJ, de Guerre LEVM, et al. - Researchers examined if there is a change in the 5-year survival after both endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open repair for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) over the last 14 years. The Vascular Quality Initiative registry from 2004 to 2018 yielded data of 4,638 ruptured AAA repairs. These comprised 409 EVARs in the early cohort (2004-2012) and 2,250 in the late cohort (2013-2018), as well as 558 open repairs in the early cohort and 1421 in the late cohort. Outcomes revealed improvement in the 5-year survival after EVAR for ruptured AAA over time, whereas survival after open repair remained constant. Consequently, there was an increase in the relative survival benefit of EVAR over open repair over time. This supports further adoption of EVAR for ruptured AAA.
