Five-year reintervention after endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in the Vascular Quality Initiative
Journal of Vascular Surgery Sep 03, 2019
Columbo JA, Ramkumar N, Martinez-Camblor P, et al. - Given that patients undergoing endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVR) remain at risk for reintervention and rupture, researchers in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) defined the 5-year rate of reintervention and rupture after EVR. From 2003 to 2015, all patients (n = 12,911) in the VQI who had EVR were identified. Data reported that the 5-year rate of reintervention for the entire cohort was 21% and the 5-year rate of late aneurysm rupture was 3%. Within 5 years after EVR in the VQI, more than one in five Medicare patients undergo reintervention. Black patients, those with large aneurysms, and those who undergo EVR as a matter of urgency and emergency have a higher probability of adverse outcomes and should be the focus of diligent long-term monitoring. No significant connections were found between age or gender and the 5-year rate of reintervention.
