Five-year prognosis and impact of adolescent knee pain: A prospective population-based cohort study of 504 adolescents in Denmark
BMJ Open Jun 02, 2019
Rathleff MS, et al. - In this pre-registered, prospective cohort study, researchers, for the first time, examined the prognosis of adolescent knee pain, and assessed its impact on health, care-seeking and career choices five years later. From a cohort of 2200 adolescents (aged 15–19) in 2011, 504 reported knee pain on at least one month and were prospectively followed in this cohort study along with 252 controls that did not have knee pain in 2011. Findings revealed that one-third of adolescents with knee pain reported regular use of painkillers during follow-up. Of the participants, 15% reported having an impact on their job and/or career choice with their knee pain. Overall, the investigators observed that four out of ten adolescents with knee pain were still experiencing frequent and intense knee pain 5 years later, severe enough to affect physical health, health behaviours and life choices.
