Five-year outcomes of transcatheter or surgical aortic-valve replacement
New England Journal of Medicine Mar 04, 2020
Makkar RR, Thourani VH, Mack MJ, et al. - The researchers presented five-year outcomes of transcatheter or surgical aortic-valve replacement. A total of 2,032 intermediate-risk individuals with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis were included at 57 centers. Individuals were stratified according to proposed transfemoral or transthoracic access (76.3% and 23.7%, respectively) and were randomized to undergo either TAVR or surgical replacement. The death from any cause or disabling stroke was the primary outcome. No significant difference was found in the incidence of death from any cause or disabling stroke between the TAVR group and the surgery group at 5 years. No significant difference was found in the incidence of death or disabling stroke at 5 years after TAVR as compared with surgical aortic-valve replacement among individuals with aortic stenosis who were at intermediate surgical risk.
