Five-year outcomes of gastric bypass in adolescents as compared with adults
New England Journal of Medicine May 22, 2019
Inge TH, et al. - Because bariatric surgery results in weight loss and health improvements in adults and adolescents, researchers wanted to know if results differ at the time of surgery depending on the patient's age. To compare results with regard to weight and coexisting conditions between the cohorts 5 years after surgery, Linear mixed and Poisson mixed models were utilized. Investigators found that adolescents and adults who were subjected to gastric bypass had a weight loss that was similar in magnitude five years after surgery. Adolescents were more likely to experience diabetes remission and hypertension than adults. More adolescents had low levels of ferritin than adults.
