Five-year outcomes of a randomized trial of treatments for varicose veins
New England Journal of Medicine Sep 12, 2019
Brittenden J, Cooper D, Dimitrova M, et al. - Researchers investigated the long-term comparative effectiveness of endovenous laser ablation and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy relative to surgery for the treatment of primary varicose veins. In this randomized, controlled trial of 798 participants with primary varicose veins at 11 centers in the United Kingdom, 595 (75%) participants completed quality-of-life questionnaires. The analysis revealed better disease-specific quality of life 5 years after treatment after laser ablation or surgery vs after foam sclerotherapy. At a willingness-to-pay ratio of £20,000 ($28,433) per quality-adjusted life-year, laser ablation was favored by the majority of the probabilistic cost-effectiveness model iterations.
